Chapter 24

Piper

“How’s Connor torturing you this week?” Will peeks at me over the rim of his coffee.

My old school didn’t have a barista or a coffee machine, unless you’re talking about the old one in the teacher’s lounge. But Prescott High has it all. Anything to make their spoiled students happy.

“He hasn’t done anything yet, but I'm sure the temporary peace will come to an end today.” I sigh, glancing over at my stepbrother and his friends.

“We should figure out a way to get even with him.” Will smirks.

“I’d love to, but I have a feeling he’ll come back harder. I'm not sure I can outdo Connor Ward.” I toss a fry into my mouth and chew slowly.

This weekend the thought really took root and I'm beginning to wonder if I can outdo him. He’s always going to push things further and won't be afraid of the consequences. He has no morals or conscience. I can't compete with that.

“There’s got to be some way to get him to stop,” Hadley murmurs, barely glancing up from studying for a test next period.

“That’s going to be hard. I have to go give Mrs. Peters a late assignment, I’ll catch up with you guys later. I’ll see if I can come up with any plans for Connor.” Will gathers his things and rushes out of the cafeteria like his ass is on fire.

“What’s going on with you? You’re awfully quiet.” I lower my voice so only Hadley can hear me.

“I don’t know. I just hate how things are so weird right now. They treat us so differently outside of school and it’s starting to piss me off.” She glances over her shoulder at Connor’s table, which now only consists of Grayson and Mac.

I find it interesting how Connor doesn’t let anyone else near him. He clearly rules this school, he’s made that painfully clear multiple times. Yet he’s never surrounded by his fan group. It’s only ever Grayson and Mac.

“I know. It’s annoying.”

“My brother likes you. He hasn’t said it, but I can tell. He doesn’t treat girls the way he treats you… at least when we’re not here.” She motions around us. “He’s himself when you’re around our house and that’s rare… I was actually kinda shocked he let Mac come over. He hasn’t let him or Connor come over in years.”

I frown at that. If Connor and Mac are his best friends, why wouldn’t he let them come over? I could understand if Mr. and Mrs. Young don’t want Connor over, but they seemed to like Mac.

“I think Mac likes you.” I grin, thinking about how cute they were together this weekend. They looked like a real couple and it was adorable.

“It doesn’t matter. Grayson would never let us be together.” She sighs, resting her chin in her hand.

“And you think Connor would allow me and Grayson to be together?” I pin her with a disbelieving look.

“Brothers are stupid,” she mutters under her breath.

“Stepbrothers are worse.”
